The Submarines are Los Angeles-based husband-and-wife duo Blake Hazard and John Dragonetti, who craft beautifully sunny and sonically delightful indie-pop music. Hailing from the Boston area, Dragonetti and Hazard were solo artists who met through a mutual friend. Their relationship led them on a tour throughout Europe, supporting one another as members of each other’s bands, and eventually landed them in their current home base of Southern California.
Unfortunately, the City of Angels wasn’t exactly heavenly – the couple broke up in 2004. They continued to work on their solo material, which unlike their current collection of tracks was more melancholy. Their lyrics expressed their sadness over the break up and themes of the songs revolved around the other. Since the duo still shared a studio, their true colors were revealed when they started working together again as artists, eventually reuniting romantically.
Their first album, Declare a New State, was released in 2006 and was a direct result of their reunion. Since then, the Submarines have experienced a good deal of exposure. Their songs have been featured in several television shows – Nip/Tuck, Gossip Girl and Grey’s Anatomy - and an instrumental cut of "You, Me and the Bourgeoisie” has been featured recently in the ubiquitous Apple commercials. The Submarines’ sound is peppered with electronic instrumentation, making it danceable and extremely catchy – Hazard and Dragonetti take turns with vocals, and the result is a collection of upbeat and harmonious songs.
