In his remarkable new work, writer and filmmaker Antonino D'Ambrosio tells the astonishing and dramatic story behind Johnny Cash's virtually unknown folk protest record Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian. Recorded four years before his live performance at Folsom Prison and six years before he recorded Man in Black, Cash, by recording Bitter Tears, placed himself in the middle of the fervent social upheavals. This inimitable account includes 34 never before seen photos from photographers Jim Marshall and Diana Davies. The original book cover artwork is by artist Shepard Fairey.

On Thursday November 5th at the Make Out Room in San Francisco, D’Ambrosio and several outstanding Bay Area musicians will come together to  bring this story of Cash’s most controversial album to life through readings and songs.

Entertainment Commission Hearing, 10/26

posted: October 23, 2009, 7:31 pm

A vocal group of ultra-conservative neighbors have banded with the anti-alcohol and anti-entertainment elements in the police department and the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to shut down nighttime entertainment in San Francisco. This is a real threat. These people have come to hearings at City Hall and blamed nighttime entertainment for violent crime, murder, and any host of problems that the City has been facing for decades. Never before have they been this strong and powerful. If you love going out at night, help us tell City Hall that nighttime entertainment is not to be blamed for society's problems.

On Monday, October 26th at 1:00PM in room 263 of City Hall, there is a hearing on the Entertainment Commission's request for additional enforcement power. We support the Entertainment Commission and their efforts. We need you to do one or two things to help insure that our community's support of the Entertainment Commission is heard.

In only its 3rd year, Treasure Island Music Festival has garnered national acclaim and become a must see on the United States’ festival circuit. SPIN described it as a “full blown love affair,”  while the SF WEEKLY claimed, “NorCal has its own Micro-achella” and declared that Treasure Island boasted “an impressive lineup with bands from all over the world.”  PASTE MAGAZINE said, “For the second year in a row, a 70-year-old, man-made island in the middle of the San Francisco Bay was home to some of the finest live bands in the country.”

Treasure Island Music Festival will continue its tradition of exposing emerging and critically established artists to the tastemakers and fans of independent music… all going down smack-dab in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. In addition to the tunes, there will be a multitude of activities for the audience including a 60-foot tall Ferris wheel, an interactive art tent, a vendor village showcasing local designers and an array of healthy and affordable food and beverages.

“Treasure Island has a unique feel for a music festival due to its intimate size and beautiful setting.  It’s very much a communal experience with artists and fans sharing similar moments together,” says Bryan Duquette of Another Planet Entertainment.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled with this year’s line-up,” adds Noise Pop’s Jordan Kurland, “It’s a well-balanced cross section of established veterans of the independent and electronic music communities alongside some of the most celebrated breakout artists of the last couple years.  It’s also a chance to be spend a day on an island with the Flaming Lips and a 60-foot Ferris wheel.”

A limited quantity of $99.99 2-Day tickets and VIP Single Day 2-Packs go on sale on Monday, July 13th at 12pm PST through www.treasureislandfestival.com. A VIP 2-Pack includes 2 VIP tickets to one day, 1 parking spot on island, preferred viewing area with bleachers, lounge with full bar and other amenities. Single Day tickets go on sale on Friday, July 17th at 10am PST.  To off-set traffic congestion and the limited amount of parking on the island, Treasure Island Music Festival will be providing shuttles on and off the island to ticket holders at no additional cost.

Announcing The Noise Pop Culture Club - Noise Pop’s Online Art Gallery and Store

posted: April 3, 2009, 2:08 pm

The 2009 Noise Pop Festival featured original gallery art shows showcasing fine art created by musicians and photography of musical communities. These shows have become an increasingly popular element of the Noise Pop Festival in recent years, examining the intensely intimate and always developing relationship between independent music and visual art. The music community provides a proving ground, soundtrack and almost limitless sources of inspiration for visual artists. In return, Art provides various landscapes and visual touchstones for music, enriching and expanding its reach through everything from photocopied show fliers, gatefold vinyl album covers, t-shirts, music videos and more.

We are pleased to announce our own online art gallery and store, the Noise Pop Culture Club. Our online gallery is launching with a selection of one of a kind fine art works from two of this year’s art shows, Lauren Dukoff’s “Family” and the group show “Sights Of Sounds.” All of the pieces showcased are available for purchase and are not reproductions; these are the actual artist-created pieces. In the future, the Noise Pop Culture Club will showcase one of a kind and limited edition works that explores the space between music and art.

Here is some more information on the two shows that are featured currently in the Noise Pop Culture Club...

For many years, Lauren Dukoff has been photographing close friend and musician Devendra Banhart and an extended, loose-knit international family of artists who share inspiration variously from folk, Tropicalia, and each other, as well as a range of other musical influences. Dukoff's striking portraits and candid images depict Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Bat for Lashes, Feathers, Espers, Vetiver, Bert Jansch, Vashti Bunyan, and many others individually and together, in performance and more private spaces. Many of these beautiful images are available to view and purchase and Chronicle Books will release “Family, Photographs by Lauren Dukoff” in July 2009.

WEDNESDAY:

Mountain Goats. John Darnielle is like your favorite cashmere sweater-- the one that has a few holes, but you love & wear it no matter-- classic, yet 100% one-of-a-kind. Our Southern Hills Cabernet Sauvignon and Louis Mel Sauvignon Blanc are both classic varietals of the Bordeaux.  The Sauvignon Blanc has crisp acidity and a peppy minerality, with distinct floral and citrus aromas.  The Cabernet Sauvignon has good structure and weight; the solid, but not overwhelming  tannins carry the classic aromas of cassis, anise, and vanilla from the oak aging. Like your favorite Mountain Goats song-- if you can pick just one...

PAIRING RED: Wente Vineyards Southern Hills Cabernet Sauvignon
PAIRING WHITE: Wente Vineyards Louis Mel Sauvignon Blanc

Papercuts.  A 'mysterious' feel was in the air when listening to Papercuts…like there was more beneath the surface.  The vocals are delicate and have a sensual nature.  The Sandstone Merlot is exactly that, with mellow tannins and a silky mouthfeel that allow for the flavors of this wine to reign supreme, with a floral note and plum and cedar.  The Morning Fog Chardonnay has great aromas of apple and pear with a lean minerality, all the while with aromas of graham and vanilla and butterscotch hanging out below the 'surface'.

PAIRING RED: Wente Vineyards Sandstone Merlot
PAIRING WHITE: Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay

THURSDAY:

Thao Nguyen.  This music is definitely happy with lots of bright notes and leaves you invigorated.  The Louis Mel Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and refreshing and the floral, white peach, and citrus flavors dance on your tongue like the peppy guitar and uplifting vocals.

PAIRING: Wente Vineyards Louis Mel Sauvignon Blanc

David Dondero. Solid Americana rock…like a solid Livermore Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.  David's voice manages to sound both familiar & completely his own;  the Southern Hills Cabernet is the same…Cabernet Sauvignon grown in California's coastal regions is familiar to all wine drinkers, but this wine has characteristics that set it apart from the pack.

PAIRING: Wente Vineyards Southern Hills Cabernet Sauvignon

Sean Smith
.  Smooth guitar licks with seamless changes and different picking styles, incorporating acoustic and electric…reminds me of the Sandstone Merlot with the seamless integration of the of the dark plum, forest floor, and cedar.  Further, the Merlot has a structure that is silky, like most of Sean's licks.

PAIRING: Wente Vineyards Sandstone Merlot

Colossal Yes
. These songs have incredible structure; the piano is prevalent throughout, but there are always other instruments, be it brass, chimes, guitar, or effects.  In the Morning Fog Chardonnay, the structure is the fruit flavors and minerality that comes from Livermore Valley Chardonnay; the oak flavors and hint of butterscotch are the other instruments.  Everything works!

PAIRING: Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay

SATURDAY:

Bob Mould.  It's hard to say something about Bob Mould that hasn't already been said. Luckily, I escape the threat of redundancy by getting to pair him with one of our wines. Without a doubt, it's our Southern Hills Cab. He is truly an  American treasure, whose body of work continually influences  artists of every generation. I would like to think that this Cabernet will have the same staying power as Zen Arcade.

PAIRING: Wente Vineyards Southern Hills Cabernet Sauvignon

Mark Eitzel.  The song Sleeping Beauty with the vocals and strings working together reminded me of the Morning Fog Chardonnay—the flavors of the barrel fermentation and the fruit and the sur lie aging come together in a cool harmony.

PAIRING: Wente Vineyards Morning Fog Chardonnay

Donovan Quinn. His moody, quietly confessional music wraps around you with its warmth. A simple and moving soundtrack to watch the sunset while enjoying a glass of our Sandstone Merlot.

PAIRING: Wente Vineyards Sandstone Merlot

Jason Finazzo
.  There's a raw familiarity to Jason's voice. Whether it's fronting local hero's 'The Naysayers' or the rootsy music of his alter-ego 'Secoundcousins', you can't help but be impressed by his passion.  His humor and bracing honesty shine through, like the upbeat Sauvignon Blanc's bright fruit and minerality.

posted: January 13, 2009, 9:23 pm

The Mosser Hotel in San Francisco is returning for the second year as the exclusive Noise Pop Festival hotel partner and offering a special discounted rate from February 24 through March 1st. Located in downtown San Francisco (on 4th Street between Market and Mission) this historic property originally opened in 1913 as the Keystone Hotel, and has offered a delightful experience for Bay Area visitors for almost 100 years. In 1981, Charles W. Mosser purchased the hotel and after an extensive renovation in 2003 renamed it The Mosser. The Mosser offers a unique, carefree culture mixed with the splendor of yester-year. This is apparent in the fusion of Victorian architecture mixed with modern interior design.

and ask about the “Noise Pop” rate - $59 per night for a standard room and $89 per night for a deluxe room.
