Earlimart

Since Earlimart's most recent record, Treble and Tremble, came out in 2004, it has become impossible to think of them without invoking the ghost of Elliott Smith. In part because of the friendship between lead singer Aaron Espinoza and Smith, but more for the musical kinship that gives that record its seance-like quality. On the disc, fragile, whispered lead vocals blend with achingly gentle strummed acoustic guitars, vintage keyboards, falsetto background vocals, and death and break-up lyrics that work like a mystic incantation. Steeped also in the clean, melodic history of broken-hearted Brits, Earlimart takes their fundamentals and spirals them out into a stately Empire of Sad. -SPARTACO ROSSI

It has been three years since Earlimart has released an album.  Known for their lush, introspective songs, singer Aaron Espinoza and cohorts have kept a quiet profile up to now, playing occasional gigs like their Noisepop appearance this last year. Their most recent release, Mentor Tormentor, has proved to be one off the most anticipated albums of the year, promising to catch the band’s progression towards mid tempo acoustic-based dream pop.  Often compared to Elliott Smith and Sonic Youth, Earlimart’s layered male/female vocals and upbeat atmosphere reflect the sun soaked shores to which they belong. -Charlie Swanson - 2007 Treasure Island Program Guide
