Although not one member of Seattle’s Death Cab For Cutie is old enough to rent a car, they’ve created the kind of buzz that might see them riding around in limos before too long. The band’s fast-selling debut, Something About Airplanes (Barsuk/Elsinor), has been in the Seattle Rocket’s NW Top 10 for months,a nd local shows are packed. While Built To Spill is an obvious comparison, attentive listeners will hear in Death Cab an updated take on Mr. Marsh’s ethereal pop. Check out the interview with the band in the new issue of SnackCake!.
Band Update:
Formed as a solo project for singer-songwriter Ben Gibbard, Death Cab for Cutie quickly grew when fellow students Chris Wall and Nick Harmer were brought in to collaborate for the 1997 cassette release of You Can Play These Songs With Chords. With the inclusion of numerous drummers through the years and an expanded 5 album catalogue, Death Cab For Cutie have grown as an indie rock staple, their fan base doubly enlarged with the success of their most recent major label debut Plans (2005). Enlisting drummer Jason McGerr to complete the lineup for the Seattle based quartet, Plans marks the bands most mature release yet, extending their characteristic melodies with additional backing arrangements and an increased instrumental fullness. With guitarist Chris Walla fronting both the production and recording elements on Plans, Death Cab for Cutie have successfully retained their independent sound despite their newly found major label backing. -Anne Ostrowski
