Thomas Campbell Opening

April 1 – May 15, 2010

OPENING RECEPTION:
Thursday, April 1, 5:30-7:30 PM

GALLERY HOURS:
Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30-5:30 PM

Email: info@gregorylindgallery.com

Gregory Lind Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by California artist Thomas Campbell. This is the artist's first solo show with the gallery and will consist of multi-paneled paintings, sewn paper pieces incorporating drawings, bronze sculpture, and wood cut-out sculpture with paintings; and a limited-edition, hand-painted print series.

An artist who perpetually introduces his audience to new stages of his own artistic evolution, Campbell blends together scribbles, scriptures, slogans, and anecdotes to assemble multilayered, interconnected works that draw from a symbolic system of meaning and associations. Known as one of the artists of Beautiful Losers–a bi-coastal collective inspired by various aspects of street culture associated with skateboarding, graffiti, punk, and hip-hop–Campbell's defiantly animated assemblages pay homage to the roguishly creative spirit of urban signage.

"YAR" is a positive affirmational slogan that hails from sailing terminology and means "all is ready to go." Campbell's usage of personal slogans in his work and his colorful rendering of text and characters against bold graphical backdrops have long been an integral part of his personal and artistic vocabulary. Whimsical and abstract vistas of shapes and color give way to bubbly spouts of textual affirmation, as in If You Can (2010), a pastoral and playfully vulgar goulash that flouts the ideals of subversive art and features acrylic, gouache, and spray paint on canvas, wood panel and gourds.

Thomas Campbell has mounted solo exhibitions at galleries in New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Morocco. His recent exhibitions include solo shows at V1 Gallery, Copenhagen, Denmark; and Hetdomein Museum, Sittard, Netherlands. Group exhibitions include "Projections," a festival of rare and hard-to-see films organized by Aaron Rose, Roberts & Tilton, Los Angeles; and New Image Art, Los Angeles. Campbell was featured in the groundbreaking touring exhibition, "Beautiful Losers" (2004-2008). He has been written about in numerous publications such as, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. In 2009, he completed his third feature-length surfing documentary film, "The Present." Campbell also serves as creative director and part owner to independent record label, Galaxia, which has released recordings by contemporary artists Tommy Guerrero, Will Oldham, and Black Heart Procession. He lives and works in Bonny Doon, CA. Support for YAR was provided by Gravis.

Cat's out of the bag...

Just announced! Thao Nguyen and Mirah will be sharing the stage at the Swedish American Music Hall on February 27th. Recently Thao talked about the show and her anticipation about the onstage collaboration to happen that night. "We have been listening to each other's songs and choosing ones we'd like to cover..I have loved Mirah's music for a long time, and it is quite an excitement and privilege to be working with her.”

Industry Noise, Noise Pop’s music industry event on the ever changing world of independent music, is pleased to announce that Josh Freese will be discussing his views and experiences. Josh Freese is only one person, but you'd be excused for thinking otherwise. He's a permanent member of A Perfect Circle, The Vandals, and Devo, and also played drums in Weezer, Nine Inch Nails, Guns n' Roses and with Sting. He's appeared on over 300 albums, and is a musician who delves into and understands the power of social media and good marketing. For his last solo album "Since 1972", he garnered widespread press for offering a shopping list of varying prices and experiences - $7 gets you a digital download, $75,000 gets you a cd, a t-shirt, Josh creating and recording an album based around your life, and more! Industry Noise will take place on Saturday, February 27th, at the Swedish American Hall.

Co-headlining with Scout Niblett is San Francisco’s Citay. This solo project of Ezra Feinberg was started alongside Tim Green of the Fucking Champs. Film Festival Schedule Announced

We’ve selected some amazing new films for this year’s festival, all focusing on music but each approaching the subject with a distinct voice and fresh perspective. There’s P-Star Rising, the incredible story of Priscilla, a 9 year-old rapper with undeniable talent and charisma, as she goes from performing shows on the street corner to sold out shows in the clubs. Blood Into Wine follows Tool frontman, Maynard James Keenan as he makes his way as a pioneer winemaker in the hostile desert of Arizona. New York City makes an appearance in Downtown Calling, a retrospective portrait of the underground scene in the late 1970s, featuring Fab 5 Freddy, Mos Def, TV on The Radio, Debbie Harry and many more. We even take a scholastic journey into the question of “Why do humans make music?” in Christopher Pomerenke’s The Heart is a Drum Machine, featuring MTV’s Kurt Loder, KCRW’s Nic Harcourt, Elijah Wood and Jason Schwartzman.

With screenings at the Roxie, Viz Cinema and Artist’s Television Access (ATA), each show is not to be missed! For full schedule and to buy tickets in advance click here.
