Tempering heavy guitar crunch with an ear for melody that sometimes recalls the sounds of '90s rock outfits Failure and Hum, San Francisco band Dear Kerosine is the project of relocated Chapel Hill songwriter Ben Flanagan. After coming to the West Coast to attend USF in 2000 and garnering solid notices with his solo acoustic shows around town, Flanagan returned home to recruit band mates for the migration back to California, initially operating under the moniker io. On the independently released 2003 debut Where The Engines Lay, the group delivered the kind of hard-hitting, power-pop anthems often associated with Flanagan's hometown. DAVE PEHLING
