Artist Forum: Does Indie Still Rock?
An artist only discussion on what it means to be an independently minded artist in today's oh-so-corporate world. Can you maintain integrity and still make a living in an industry that is becoming even less adventurous? What new opportunities - if any - does the digital age represent?
Featuring: John Doe (X, The John Doe Thing), Jody Stephens (Big Star and Ardent Studios), Will Schwartz (Imperial Teen), Sharky Laguana (Creeper Lagoon), and more TBA.
Moderated by Christopher Appelgren (President of Lookout Records, The Pattern).
Independent Rock In The New Millennium: Questioning Values in a Changing Pop Landscape
Indie music has undergone a decade of radical transformation from the early 90's heyday of fuzzed-out guitars. Here's your chance to see some of the most respected and opinionated music and culture writers examine the genre's relevance in today's culture. How has its intercourse with the mainstream de- or evolved? How has the emergence of independent electronica or hip-hop altered the landscape? Where does it seem to be heading and who's making the map?
Featuring:
Greil Marcus - (author of "Lipstick Traces" and "Mystery Train" and many others, contributing writer to Rolling Stone, Interview, New Yorker, and on and on), Ann Powers (staff writer at the New York Times, curator at the Experience Music Project museum, author of "Weird Like Us"), Gina Arnold (author of "Route 66: The Route To Nirvana" and contributing writer to Spin, East Bay Express, LA Times), Neva Chonin (staff writer at the SF Chronicle and contributor to Rolling Stone), and Deborah Giattina (SF Bay Guardian). Moderated by Greg Heller (producer and writer at VH1, contributor to Alternative Press, Rolling Stone, Raygun).
